This beautifully engraved commemorative challenge coin features the haunting image of the New York skyline prior to the terror attack on 9-11-01. Rick Rescorla was one of our nations heroes whose story must be told and retold as we head into a new millennial so we never forget the sacrifice and heroism that saved almost 3000 lives that fateful day before losing his own in the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
The History of the Challenge Coin
The creation of coins being minted to commemorate exemplary actions or accomplishments dates back to the renaissance period. That’s where the history gets a little foggy. However, there are many accounts of the use of such coins throughout history and throughout the world. The ‘challenge’ came much more recently, and became a fun way for people to engage upon meeting and share camaraderie. The acceptable way to engage is in a special handshake, in which the person holding the challenge coin (typically) in the palm of his right hand presenting it either as a gift; which is a true honor, or as a challenge.
In the challenge: If the receiving hand has no coin with them, that person buys a round of drinks.
