Named "To The Struggle Against World Terrorism" and dedicated on September 11, 2006, this memorial honors those who lost their lives in the 9/11 and 1993 WTC terrorist attacks.
The monument - gifted to the USA by Russian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli - stands in direct view of the Statue of Liberty and the former World Trade Centers. At more than 100 feet tall, the structure's cracked facade resembles the two towers and the 40-foot stainless steel teardrop represents "sadness and grief over the loss of life, but also hope for a future free from terror."
This monument was dedicated on the fifth anniversary of 9/11 in a ceremony attended by President Bill Clinton, Governor Jon Corzine, Senator Frank Lautenberg, Senator Robert Menedez, Mayor Joseph V. Doria Jr, family members of the World Trade Center victims and other dignitaries.
By day or night, the memorial is clearly visible from lower Manhattan, the Staten Island Ferry, ships passing through New York Harbor, and airplanes approaching Newark Airport.
